The World Heritage Sites List is organized by UNESCO, and it contains list of irreplacable places or objects of cultural or natural heritage. The first World Heritage High Level Meeting was organized in 1972 to discuss the world heritage sites that needs to be maintained and protected. Since that meeting, and until 2004, UNESCO has established 788 World Heritage Sites in 134 countries.

In 1993, some sites in Japan were established as world heritage sites. Those include Shirakami Sanchi, Yakushima, Himeji Jou, the Budhist temple of Houryuuji. In the late 2000, some other sites joined the list as well, such as Genbaku dome, Itsukushima-jinja, Kyoto Historical Monument, Uji, Ootsu and 'Gassho-zukuri' in Shirakawa-go and Gokayama, the temple in Niko and Gusuku, as well as the Shuri-jo palace of the Ryukyu kingdom.

In 2004, the 'holy sites' and pilgrimage route in the Kii mountain and its surrounding area were also enlisted as part of the World Natural Heritage.
